Lionel Messi ’s goalscoring exploits have seen him net the Golden Shoe award for the fifth time. The prestigious trophy is awarded to the player with the most goals in league matches in the top division of each European league.
The Argentinian superstar has won the accolade more times than any other player, as his 34 La Liga goals in the 2017/18 season saw him presented with the prize.
Messi saw off competition from Premier League duo Mohamed Salah and Harry Kane to top the chart.
The Barcelona forward was presented with his fifth golden shoe at a special event in the Catalan city, with team-mates Sergio Busquets and Sergio Roberto in attendance.
In a nice twist to the event, five children from a local hospital supported by Messi’s foundation were called in to display his five Golden Shoes atop a series of letters spelling out his name.
Messi, 31, has shown no signs of letting up and his 14 goals already this campaign mean he is leading Europe in scoring once again as he targets a third straight golden shoe
