Lady Gaga is headlining Coachella for the first time this Saturday—what can we expect from Mother Monster? Her longtime choreographer and artistic director Richy Jackson spills details on her upcoming set.
1) Rehearsals have been hectic.
Gaga’s been practicing “pretty much every day,” Jackson told Entertainment Weekly. She only found out she’s replacing Beyoncé in the lineup six weeks ago. Since then, it’s been constant meetings, arranging the setlist, arranging the music and then figuring out the outfits.
2) The set will explore “various genres.”
“[W]hat I can tell you, it is going to be high energy, we are going to play with some of her various genres she has within her as an artist and figure out a way to allocate those things throughout the show, and take some risks and some chances and have a good time, because we’re out there at Coachella,” Jackson told EW
3) Nothing is locked in.
The interview took place just days before the start of Coachella weekend, but Jackson revealed that not everything was “locked in” yet. But he also joked that he won’t feel that way until “as soon as we get off stage.” He still couldn’t say how many songs they’re doing.
4) There might be a “wow” moment.
The choreographer did not indulge in specifics, but there are a few hints. “There’s always a “wow” with Gaga at some point. That’s all I can say!” he teased. He didn’t confirm whether there would be any surprise guests or jumping-from-the-roof stunts—but he didn’t deny it either.
5) It will not be Joanne-related.
Gaga’s Joanne tour kicks off later this year, but don’t expect her Coachella performance to act as a precursor. “This is exclusively for Coachella,” he told EW. “The Joanne world tour will be something entirely different.”
